The Medical Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

How you can benefit from a tummy tuck surgery.

Most commonly, people undergo abdominoplasty cosmetic surgery, commonly referred to as a “tummy tuck”, to assist in their confidence regarding their appearance. However, did you know that abdominoplasty also offers other great advantages to patients who choose this procedure? In addition to removing excess skin to create a leaner, tighter appearance, it can also reduce back pain and help improve incontinence after childbearing. Both of these ailments are commonly related to labor and delivery of a child, and many women may find that undergoing this procedure may also help them in two other areas they are experiencing trouble with. Often women will seek out this surgery for its physical benefits, but find that it also helps them in other ways.

D. Alastair Taylor of the CAPS Clinic in Deakin, Australia conducted a study in 2018 that focused on women who were set to have the procedure of an abdominoplasty completed. All women had gone through labor and delivery prior to the surgery and were ultimately seeking the procedure to help gain back their prior shape and size of their abdomen. Women who underwent the procedure were asked about the pain they experience in their back as well as their urinary incontinence both pre- and post-surgery. Before the surgery took place, more than half of the women had issues caused by their back pain. A little under half of the women had issues with urinary incontinence. These questions were asked prior to the surgery to determine how successful the procedure was in eliminating these negative ailments.

After the surgery, the researchers followed up with these patients and found that both groups experienced improvement after their procedures in both areas of back pain and urinary incontinence. The procedures had been successful in both intentions, both based on appearance and on the treatment as aids for physical pains and ailments. The belief is that the improvement comes about due to helping to restore the stability to the abdominal and pelvic region on the body. Women who are considering having abdominoplasty done may want to consider all of the improvements it can bring to their quality of life while they are deciding on the surgery. Knowing all it is capable of helping with could help them decide to go through with the procedure.

When it comes to why women have these common ailments after birth, the reasons can vary. The body has just gone through tremendous stress growing a baby and labor can be extremely invasive and trying on the body. While a woman is pregnant, her uterus is stretched to accommodate the baby, and this then weakens abdominal muscles and also has an effect on posture. Putting on weight can also cause pain in muscles and joints, and the body’s changing hormones can add to this pain by causing joints and ligaments to become looser. Similarly, giving birth causes the pelvic floor muscles to become weak. Because of this, it can be hard to control the flow of urine and some may leak out of the bladder when the woman coughs, sneezes, works out, etc. Along with these symptoms, pregnancy also changes a woman’s body when it comes to appearance. It is very common to gain weight during pregnancy, and it is not always easy to lose afterward. Having a child can also cause a change in the appearance of the abdomen, as the muscles are weakened. This can also cause a woman to lose core strength due to muscle loss.

Choosing to have an abdominoplasty procedure done is a great option for women who are not only looking for a way to help change the appearance of their midsection. It can also lead to assistance with the back pain and urinary incontinence issues that women may face after giving birth. Overall, it is essential to begin to see this procedure as not just a cosmetic surgery, but as a way to assist women dealing with various ailments that can be fixed through it. Most insurances do not cover the procedure because it is cosmetic surgery, but perhaps once the more functional effects of the surgery are researched further, it could begin to be seen as an answer to ailments.

With this approach, we can make sure that you will be as safe as possible. We speak with you about your expectations and goals before assessing your medical history and determining the safest, most effective plan.

What’s the difference between reconstructive and cosmetic surgery?

The purpose of cosmetic surgery is to reshape the body to improve self-esteem and create a more ideal self-image. On the other hand, the purpose of reconstructive surgery is to address disfigurement, defects, and other abnormalities. These issues may arise after accidents, surgeries to remove tumors, and things of that nature. Another big difference between these two types of surgery is the fact that cosmetic surgery is rarely covered by health insurance, while reconstructive surgery is usually covered.

What can I expect when I recover from my cosmetic surgery?

Your recovery experience depends on a number of factors. First of all, the type of procedure you choose may impact your recovery. Some procedures are less extensive and invasive than others, and you will likely experience an easier recovery period as a result. In addition, different patients recover in different ways. Some may require more or less pain medication than others. Your surgeon can prescribe the correct pain medications to help you overcome any discomfort. The good news is that virtually all facial cosmetic procedures involve easy recovery periods.

    How does Botox work?

Botox injections are designed to reduce or remove visible signs of aging. The most common targets are hyper-functional lines - commonly known as “wrinkles.” These lines result from the contraction of underlying facial musculature, and Botox is effective because it temporarily weakens these muscles and prevents them from contracting. Botox does this without affecting the sensory feeling in these muscles. Botox may take up to 7 days to take full effect, although some patients notice considerable results in as little as 24 hours.

How do I choose the right size for my breast implants?

Choosing the right size for your new breast implants is an important decision. The choice is obviously based heavily on your own personal desires and tastes. On the other hand, you also need to take into account a number of additional factors. You might need to consider things like whether you have breastfed heavily in the past, and how this has affected your breasts. Remember, you can also receive cosmetic surgery to make breasts smaller. You can even receive surgery to change the general shape of the breasts without necessarily changing their size.

How long do I need to take off work?

You may need to take some time off work after undergoing your cosmetic procedure. Your surgeon will speak with you and let you know how long you need to fully recuperate. In general, most patients should rest for at least a week after receiving cosmetic surgery (less invasive procedures like Botox shouldn’t require any time off work).
